History of Aylsham
Aylsham is a town steeped in history. It is thought that the name Aylsham dates from around 500 AD when a Saxon called Aegel set up his homestead here. As "ham" means homestead, the village would have been known as Aegel's Ham. It was recorded as Elesham in the Domesday Book (1086)

Two FREE Heritage town trail are available from the Heritage Centre, one aimed at adults and one specifically aimed at children. Both walks follow the same route around the town, looking at points of historical interest, with the children's trail including puzzles and quizzes along the way.

Lots of information and photographs are included on a wide range of subjects such as trains, wherries, schools, shops and cinemas. Quizzes, stories and activities are included too!
